Seven Words - Five
Hours of crucifixion gone by, Jesus reminds those gathered there of his humanity through the most basic bodily response - thirst. Our Savior substitute had to be fully God in order to fulfill the righteous demands of the Law, but also fully human to physically take our place. The text points out, "Wonder not whether he human be." Unique to this setting is the inclusion of alto solo, brief alto divisi at the beginning, and the option to elide directly with The Sixth Word.
